Screenly supports passkeys as a fast, secure way to sign in using your device's biometrics or PIN, with no password or one-time code required. This guide covers how passkeys work, and how to set it up for signing in to Screenly. Passkeys authenticate with your device's biometrics or PIN. No code or email needed.
For more background on password removal, see Screenly blogs: No more passwords in Screenly and Password login is being removed on May 21.
What you need
- A supported browser: Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox (any modern version).
- One of the following to store the passkey:
- A device with biometrics (Touch ID, Face ID, fingerprint reader, or Windows Hello)
- A hardware security key (e.g., YubiKey)
- iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, or a Chrome profile
How to set up passkeys for signing in to Screenly
Step 1: Open security settings
Click your avatar in the top-right corner and select Settings. In the left sidebar, select Security and scroll down to the Passkeys section.
Step 2: Name your passkey and click "Add passkey"
Type a name for the passkey in the text field, for example MacBook Touch ID or iPhone. Then click Add passkey.
Note: Use a name that identifies the device or credential manager storing this passkey. You can add multiple passkeys, one per device.
Step 3: Choose where to save the passkey
Your browser will prompt you to pick a storage location.
| Option | Best for |
| iCloud Keychain | Apple devices. Syncs automatically across all your signed-in Macs, iPhones, and iPads. |
| Use a phone, tablet, or security key | Android devices or hardware keys like YubiKey. |
| Your Chrome profile | Chrome users who want the passkey tied to their Google account. |
Step 4: Confirm with biometrics or PIN
Your device will ask you to verify your identity to save the passkey. On a Mac this appears as a "Save a passkey?" dialog with a Touch ID prompt.
Touch the fingerprint sensor, or use Face ID or your device PIN to confirm.
The passkey is now saved and will appear in the Passkeys list on your Security settings page.
How to sign in with a passkey
-
From the sign in page, select Sign in with Passkey.
- Your device will prompt you to verify with the biometric or PIN you used when setting up the passkey. Confirm it, and you are signed in.
Managing your passkeys
From Account Settings > Security > Passkeys, you can:
- Search existing passkeys by name.
- Add passkeys for additional devices.
- Remove a passkey by clicking the delete icon next to it.
There is no limit on the number of passkeys you can register. One passkey per device is a common setup.
Troubleshooting
My passkey is not working on a new device. If you stored the passkey in iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, it syncs automatically to your other signed-in devices. If you used a device-bound option (hardware key or Chrome profile without sync), add a new passkey from that device.
I lost access to the device with my passkey. Sign in using a one-time code sent to your email, go to Security settings, remove the old passkey, and add a new one from your current device.
The browser passkey prompt does not appear. Make sure your browser is up to date. The WebAuthn API must not be blocked. Try disabling browser extensions to isolate the issue.
I am being asked for a password but I don't have one. Password login was removed on May 21, 2026. Use a one-time code, or sign in with Google, GitHub, Microsoft, or SAML. If you have lost access to the email address on your account, contact Screenly support.
