We've received a few questions about being able to load assets directly to the devices. This is unfortunately not supported. Yet, since we cache all cacheable assets (images and videos) on the device, the asset will only get downloaded once.
There are a few reasons for this, but the primary reason is because we would not be able to validate the assets if they were loaded directly onto the Raspberry Pi.
When you upload an asset to Screenly, we do a number of checks on the asset. If needed, we will also re-encode the asset to optimize it for the Raspberry Pi.
If an assets is no longer in an active playlist, it will get deleted from the device.
